Goldendoodle History

The history of the Goldendoodle is a very interesting one. To understand the rise of the Goldendoodle we must start back to the rise of the Labradoodle. The story goes that in the 1980s many Labs were used as guide dogs. One blind woman in particular from Hawaii needed a dog desperately to help her with her daily activities but her husband was severely allergic to the fur of the Labrador retriever. An organization by the name of the Guide Dogs of Victoria decided to help her. They bred together a standard poodle with a Labrador retriever. The offspring was perfect for this woman's needs. The litter yielded one pup which was hypoallergenic and also had the correct temperament to be considered as a guide dog. From here on in the Labradoodle was well known.

This started the rise of the Goldendoodle. This came about around 1990. The Goldendoodle was the perfect mix. Everyone loved the Golden Retriever's loving and good natured qualities yet many were allergic to the fur and dander. This cross-breeding became an instant hit. Today many families have Goldendoodles as part of their families and the number is increasing.

Goldendoodles' Appearance

The Goldendoodle coat can vary from very curly to slightly wavy. The curlier the coat is the more hypoallergenic the dog becomes. The color of the Goldendoodle can vary as well. Colors include apricot, cream, gold, red, brown, black, and parti-colored. Both the coat coloring and texture can depend on the parents. The size of the Goldendoodle can be either standard or miniature. Standard results from the breeding of a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle and the miniature results from the breeding of a Golden Retriever with a Miniature Poodle.

Goldendoodle's Temperament

The temperament of the Goldendoodle will vary just like the appearance. The easiest way to determine the temperament or personality of your new Goldendoodle puppy is to take a look at the parents. When both parents are calm and even tempered, it is safe to assume that the offspring will carry on those same traits. If you are worried at all about the temperament of your new puppy having a training process and making sure that the puppy is well socialized from a very early age is key. This will help to ensure that your new puppy will be a wonderful member of the family.

Goldendoodle's Role

The Goldendoodle has become a very popular hybrid breed to date. The Goldendoodle is known as a wonderful family dog and a great companion. The mix seems to carry on the lovable and sweet natured personality of the Golden Retriever while giving families the benefit of an allergy free non-shedding dog. It truly has become one of the top dog breeds in America.
